A Rainbow of Values

I saw this idea at Curly's Creations  that someone had posted and I LOVED it. Its pretty much the same as what was posted there, but instead of putting the ribbons on the handle, I decided that I would tie them around the rim of the basket.

You Will Need:
1 white wire basket (found at Dollar Tree)
Ribbon in the colors of the YW Values
Scissors

All you do is cut ribbon in about 3 inch stips (or what ever size will work for you and your basket) and tie the ribbons to the basket.  For mine, I tied 2 ribbons in one hole.

(close up)

This idea is perfect to hold any handouts for lessons or a place to hold cell phones (if you have that problem) or treats. The possibilities are endless!!!

Cute Idea For Teaching Lessons

When I was called to the YW's program, I knew that I would end up teaching some lessons. Which at the time was a scary thought as I had only taught nursery lessons up until this point. Anyway, that is another story let me get back to this one. I knew I would be teaching and I love to make print up a wide variety of things so that the girls have something to look at. BUT I hated having to deal with tape or pins or those little clips above the chalkboard that never really seem to do the trick. So as I was walking through one of our local craft stores, I saw an idea that would be perfect! So easy that even I could do it with out messing up to much!

Here is what you need:
ITEMS NEEDED
MODGE PODGE (the glossy one)
SCRAP BOOK PAPER SCRAPS (and I know that most of you have this just laying around)
CLEAR GLASS STONES (found at craft stores in bundles about 1" inch in size is good, I found mine for about $4.00 for about 20 stones)
MAGNETIC BUTTONS (found these in the craft isle at Wal Mart)
PAINT BRUSH
NAIL FILE or FINE GRAIN SANDPAPER to smooth and file the edges
SCISSORS or STRAIGHT EDGE BLADE (the little orange thing in the picture)
HOT GLUE GUN

STEPS (will post step by step pics SOON)
1. Take scrapbook paper and find a nice design on it that you want on your magnet and cut out about a 1 inch square (or large enough to barely fit the area of the glass stone you are using.

2. Once you have your picture, take some modge podge and paint brush and brush some on to the flat part of stone and press hard against the paper and smooth out.

3. Once paper is securely modge podged to the stone, take scissors or blade and trim around the stone.

4. Take sand paper or nail file and file the edge of the paper down to the stone so that there are no rough edges.

5. Take hot glue gun and one magnet and glue to the center on the back of the stone.

6. Repeat steps until you have done all you are going to do. (Yes, I know I didn't write it but easiest thing to do is get all your stones and paper modged podged together  and then glue the magnets to the backs of stones).

It's really that simple and they turn out really cute and hold well on chalkboards (even through card stock!) and the possibilities are endless!!!

Modest Is Hottest

So this past Wednesday night for mutual, we took our girls to the mall for a scavanger hunt based on modesty.
We started out the evening by gathering in a somewhat vacant corner of the mall and we all formed a circle and sang (with actions) Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.
Then once we had completed that task we asked the girls why we had them sing that song and came up with that if you can reach your hands up and see your underclothes/sto
mach or if you can bend over and you see a part of the back or any frontal clevage then perhaps you are not dressed as modest as you should be. We also mentioned that modest clothing should not be tight fitting or revealing.

Once we had discussed on what being modest was, we broke the girls and the leaders (to make sure our girls didn't get into any trouble within the mall) into two groups and gave them a list. They had to find a MODEST church outfit, and out fit for everyday and an outfit that could be worn for a dance along with one PINK accessory. The outfits had to be something that the girls would wear. We also told them as a challenge to try and be frugal with their outfits the chose and a 30 min time limit. I have to say that my group (all beehives) found 4 complete outfits for under $72.00 and since we had some time to kill, we let them try on some dresses and took their pictures (only I forgot my camera and didn't think of getting out my phone).

The girls had a great time and found some really cute modest outfits. It was a great way to help teach about being modest and allow girls to do something they love to do, go to the mall and shop (even if it was just window shopping!).

Simple Value Bookmarks

Ok, so like I stated in the previous post, I had some value bookmarks that I was creating but I hadn't found the site where I got the graphics that I used from. Well I finally found the site, so a big THANK YOU to HOT PINK PANSY (link on side bar) for the wonderful freebies.

Coming...values!

I am currently in the process of creating some little bookmarks (yes, I like bookmarks!) that have to do with the Young Woman's values however, some the graphics that I am using I lost the site that I received them from and I don't want to post anything without giving credit to the person(s) who took the time to create the graphics that I am using...so with that being said keep a look out and with any luck I will get them posted soon!!

Redemption of the Dead

Last night the youth and leaders from the sixth and eighth wards went up to the Idaho Falls Temple and did Baptisms for the Dead. What a wonderful experience it was for everyone involved. We even had a few adult converts come with us and it was amazing to see them participate in the ordinances that would help bring those who have passed on the start of the wonderful blessings they will continue to receive as more work is done in their name.

Just being placed in the YW, it was my first opportunity to go as a leader. I have great respect for the sisters that work there now and for my own leaders who had to watch over us while we, as youth, would go and perform baptisms. It allowed me time to get to know the girls that I am going to be working with as well as coming closer to my Savior. Even though I was there to assist, I still had many questions answered just from taking time to observe and listen quietly (when I wasn't "working" with the young women).
By the end of the night, we had 19 young men and 17 young women from our two wards, plus an additional 5 young women from another stake who were walk ins, performed 452 baptisms and just over 452 confirmations! What a wonderful experience to know that 904+ people have the opportunity to accept those covenants and enjoy the blessings that come from them.

Integrity-Making a Case for Morality

This week for mutual, the girls learned about the value INTEGRITY. So to help with the lesson, we took out a book that was compiled for FHE based on the President Gordon B. Hinckley's book Standing for Something: Ten Neglected Virtues that will heal our hearts and homes. Here was the basic lesson plan of the night: (there is a link at the bottom of this post if you want a copy of the lesson)

Making a Case for Morality
(FHE based on the YW value of Integrity)

STORY:
Many years ago President Hinckley worked in a Denver railroad office where he was in charge of the baggage and express traffic carried in passenger trains. One day he received a telephone call from another railroad in New Jersey who said that a passenger train had arrived without its baggage car. Three hundred passengers were angry because they had no luggage.
They discovered that the train had left California and travelled to Utah and then to Denver and St. Louis with not problems. However, in St. Louis a switchman had mistakenly moved a piece of steel just three inches. That piece do steel was a switch point and the baggage car that should have been in New Jersey was in Louisiana, fourteen hundred miles away.

This lesson is similar to the workings of a heave farm gate. Such a gate moves very little at the hinges, but a long way out at the circumference. A very small movement at the hinge brings long movement at the end of the gate.

So it is with our lives. A careless poor decision can wreak havoc with consequences that reach farther than you could ever imagine.

We must stay away from that which leads to:
            1. Unclean thoughts
            2. Unclean language
            3. Harmful behavior

DISCUSSION:
We can choose heroes and heroines with high standards to look up to-men and women of tremendous physical and moral courage.

President Hinckley has had several heroes to emulate throughout his life. They include:
            George Washington
            Thomas Jefferson
            Abraham Lincoln
Charles Lindbergh-who flew over the Atlantic in a single-engine Spirit of St. Louis, landing 33 hours later.
Admiral Richard E. Byrd- who commanded an expedition to the South Pole.
Stephen Hopkins- an ancestor of President Hinckley who was a passenger on the Mayflower.

Think of men and women you know who are examples of moral courage to serve as your heroes.

What are some things in our lives that could have a harmful influence on us?
            Magazines, internet, Movies, Music, Television.

“It is native to believe that a steady diet of blatant immorality played out nightly in our living rooms has no effect on people. I am always curious when individuals insist that what they watch on television or in the movie theaters doesn’t affect them. It was interesting to note that the going rate for a 30 second advertising spot in the 1999 Super Bowl was 1.5 million dollars. Apparently a host of advertisers felt confident that in 30 seconds time they could influence their viewers to buy the products or services they were peddling. Are we really to believe that hours, leading to years, of television viewing will not affect attitudes about everything from family life to appropriate sexual relations?”  -President Hinckley

GAME:
            “What’s on your mind?”

PURPOSE:  To illustrate the importance of putting good things in our minds so the world does not fill it for us. Point out how easily our minds fill up with information when we see it regularly. Explain that if we just watch TV, that is what will fill our minds. More importantly, we need to fill out minds with scriptures, good books, games, and movies, so that our minds are not filled with the unpleasant.

Read a phrase from the Commercial Slogans and see if they can identify the products:

“Yo quiero”………………………………………………………………………………………………..Taco Bell
“Like a rock”………………………………………………………………………………………….Chevy Truck
“Give us a week, we’ll take off the weight”…………………………………………………….Slim Fast
“Got milk?”………………………………………………………………………………………..Dairy Industry
“Just do it”……………………………………………………………………………………………………….Nike
“Melts in your mouth, not in your hands”………………………………………………..M&M Candy
“It’s your store”………………………………………………………………………………… …….Albertsons
“Always low prices”……………………………………………………………………………………..Walmart
“We love to see you smile”………………………………………………………………………..McDonalds
“The pain killer most recommended by hospitals”…………………………………………...Tylenol
“Mm Mm Good”……………………………………………………………………………...Campbell’s Soup
“What’s on your list today”……………………………………………………………………….Fred Meyer

Who Will Stand

The Young Womens torch represents the light of Christ, inviting all to “come unto Christ” (Moroni 10:32). It invites all young women to hold up the light of Christ by keeping His commandments.  (lds.org)
